[Construction Site on Andrássy Avenue between the Eötvös Street and the Csengery Street after Finishing the Sidewalls and the Ground]

The photograph represents the construction of the Millennium Underground in Budapest on the Andrássy Avenue between the Eötvös Street and the Csengery Street. The first underground electric railway on the European continent was built by the German firm Siemens & Halske in 1894-1896 and was inaugurated by Emperor Franz Joseph on the 2nd of May in 1896. The German-born photographer, György Klösz (1844-1913) was commissioned to document the phases of the construction on the spot. A representative photographic album was published with 15 items, documenting the construction, the entrance buildings of the stations, as well as the technical units of the underground railway.
