Object description:

The ornamental print illustrates the motifs of different textiles from Bács and Hunyad counties (territory of the former Austro-Hungarian Monarchy). The print is part of the representative album titled A magyar házi ipar díszítményei - Ornamente der Hausindustrie Ungarns - Ornements de l industrie domestique de la Hongrie (1878), which documents the textile objects displayed by Hungary on the World Exhibition held in Vienna in 1873. In 1872, the Royal Hungarian Ministry of Religion and Public Instruction commissioned Flóris Rómer and János Xántus, keepers of the Hungarian National Museum, to establish a collection made of common art objects (objects of „Hausindustrie”). Its aim was to represent Hungary on the Vienna World Exhibition next year. After the international event, the collection became part of the Applied Arts Museum in Budapest. For documenting this particular textile collection, the Ministry published a representative album of chromolithographs, selected by the Hungarian art historian and later museum director Károly Pulszky (1853-1899) and designed by the German textile designer and draughtsman Friedrich Fischbach (1839-1908). These prints served as patterns for the Hungarian art and drawing education in the last decades of the 19th and at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries. The series of chromolitographic plates is one of the first and very rare example of the Hungarian published pattern books of the second half of the 19th century. The provenance of these rare prints leads to the remarkable personality of the late 19th century, Count Jenõ Zichy (1837-1906), who played an active role in organizing the industrial education in Hungary. The seal of the Count’s Library can be seen on the hard cover of the book.
