The Red Rocks at Cività Castellana

In the 1820s, Corot visited Italy to study classical landscape painting. But he did not confine his studies to the old masters. In the Sabine Hills north of Rome, he made numerous drawings and oil studies of the surroundings. It was here that he made this paintings of red sandstone cliffs, the Rocce Rosse just outside the village of Cività Castellana. Corot’s Italian sketches are early examples of the plein-air painting that would have a seminal influence on French19th century landscape painting.
På 1820-talet besökte Corot Italien för att fördjupa sig i den klassiska landskapstraditionen. Men han studerade inte enbart de gamla mästarna. I Sabinerbergen norr om Rom utförde han en rad teckningar och oljestudier av det omgivande landskapet. Bland annat tillkom här en serie målningar av de röda sandstensklipporna Rocce Rosse strax utanför byn Cività Castellana. Corots italienska studier är tidiga exempel på det friluftsmåleri som skulle spela en avgörande roll för den franska landskapskonsten under 1800-talet.
