Object description:

Although in the inventories of aristocratic and burgher houses in Croatia there is mention of large numbers of seating suites, only a few have actually been preserved. This suite consists of seven parts: a corner cupboard, a table, sofa, two armchairs and two chairs; shown here are the sofa, an armchair and a chair. It is produced from soft white painted wood with white details. In Neoclassicism, although not for the first time in the history of furnishing, the wooden surfaces were painted in a combination of white and pastel or white and gold tones. The simple forms of the calm contour lines, characteristic legs attenuated to the bottoms, cubes with carved rosettes at the join of legs and frame of the seat – all these are elements typical of the time and style. The sofa and armchairs are upholstered with the original cotton cloth with printed Neoclassicist decorative motifs (vases with flowers, putti, cornucopias). Instead of the usual canework, the seats and backs of the chairs are filled with plaited rope. The suite was found in Castle Januševac, but it was not part of the original furnishing from the time of the building.
