Object description:

The black polished clock consists of a prismatic base, a central part that is opened up and articulated with two pillars and two half-pillars, and an upper cubic element containing the movement and dial. The moving figures on the dial – cupids forging arrows – are activated when certain time segments are struck. This clock is of high quality production of portal clocks with stylistic features of the late Empire Clocks in the form of portals were a particularity of clock design in the Habsburg Empire in the 1810s and 1820s. Clockmaker Marcus Gohm, an Austrian who became a citizen of Varaždin in 1818 and worked in the town, leaving a considerable quantity of clocks with Empire and early Biedermeier stylistic features. A portal clock signed Marcus Gohm in Steinamanger is in existence, telling of his activity in Hungary.
