Object description:

This armchair with its clear construction and austere lines as well as the marked aesthetics of the combination, was designed for the “Moša Pijade” Workers’ University (today the Open University, designed by R. Nikšić and N. Kučan in 1961). Bernardi (1921 – 1985), one of the leading Croatian architects, achieved his biggest successes in the field of furniture design and interior decoration. He was vigorously involved in issues relating to housing at a practical and a theoretical level. From the fifties on, he was a fervent advocate of the design profession and of tertiary level training in design. He designed standardised furniture (for offices, schools and public spaces) for Croatian producers. However, the most product collaborative effort came with the TVIN factory of Virovitica, for which he designed systems of furnishings for flats, hotels and workspaces.
