Object description:

The obverse of this rare gold coin, with a laureate head of Vespasian, bears the inscription IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG TR P ("Emperor Caesar Vespasianus Augustus, with Tribunician Power"). The reverse features a depiction of the triumphal chariot and, in the lower field, the legend TRIVMP AVG ("Triumph of the Emperor"). The victory of Rome over Judea and the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE were commemorated by the Romans in various ways. Among these was the minting of gold, silver, and bronze coins depicting the victorious emperor, mourning Jewesses, and the trophy-Jewish weapons that had fallen into Roman hands after the defeat.
