Object description:

Various strips for zoetrope. Tip. Morris et Comp. Invented by W. G. Horner in 1834 and inspired by the phenakistiscope, the zoetrope had the advantage of allowing various people to see the moving image at the same time. It consisted of a metallic or cardboard drum with various vertical slots cut into it that rotated horizontally around a pivot mounted on a solid base. The zoetrope had a series of longitudinal paper strips on the perimeter of the drum going to halfway up its height. Set inside the drum and viewed from, the outside through the slots while it turned, it gave the sensation of continuous movement of the image. The images on the strips were simple drawings that showed the different steps of a movement.
