Figure for Javanese shadow puppet theatre
Object description:
Javanese shadow puppet made of buffalo skin and hand painted. It has small holes throughout the silhouette to give more luminosity. Left arm articulated and moved by a wooden stick (35 cm height).
The Javanese shadow theatre was given the name Wayang Kulit. This was also the name of the figures, which were made of highly crafted animal skins with incisions and hand colouring. They represented ancient mythological stories from the oral traditions, like Ramayana. Heroes, demons, monsters and other mythological characters were the main characters of this shadow puppet theatre, one of the most famous in the Far East and still performed today as part of their traditional culture.
