Institution

Object description:

Lithophany was another optical curiosity typical in the nineteenth century. It consists of a porcelain plate with an image in bas-relief sculpted into it. If it is illuminated from behind the image appearing in the transparency gives a sensation of reality and depth, with the perception of a full range of greys.
