Thaumatrope
Object description:
Thaumatrope. This device produce the effect of a continuous rotation using a gear with images on each side of a plate. It includes red wooden handle and 1 plate (7. 8 x 9 cm).
It was invented by A. Paris in 1895. The thaumatrope involved a paper disk or rectangle held on either side by strings, so that they could be twisted between the thumb and another finger. Te two sides of the disk had different, complementary drawings on them (such a bird on a cage), so that with a quick rotating movement the images would become one and be connected in the retina.
