Object description:

Phenakistiscope. R. S. Siebenmann Lithograph. Le Periphanoscope le spectre magique. It was invented by J. A. Plateau in 1832, the apparatus consisted of a disk with slots on which twelve or more images of the phases of a movement were placed in sequence. The disk was attached to the end of a handle by bolts and was made to rotate in front of a mirror. The image reflected in the mirror as seen through the slots showed a constant movement.
